Birders support Chevella Banyans

Among the birds that were spotted were these Bay-backed shrikes. The two near-threatened species spotted were Woolly-necked stork and Painted stork. A White-eyed buzzard on a neem tree. A birder - Leela Sagar - at work Birding for a cause was a different experience The group after the event. Certificates and T-shirts were given to all the participants.

Sunday, 23 December 2023, Moinabad, Hyderabad Hyderabadis celebrate banyans judgement People f rom all walks of life gathered around a cluster of Banyan trees to celebrate Christmas with the magnificent, century-old trees. It was also a celebration of the judgement from the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in favour of the trees. The issue: Citizens from across Hyderabad gathered around a cluster of Banyan trees on the road a little after Moinabad to celebrate Christmas – and to express gratitude for the NGT Judgement of 6 November 2023 in favour of the banyan trees. The NGT has asked the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) not to go ahead with the road project unless they conduct an environmental impact assessment. Over a thousand Banyans line the National Highway (NH- 163) stretch from Hyderabad to Manneguda, 45 km away. These Banyans were planted by the Nizam nearly 100 years ago, and have been under the threat of felling because of a four-laning project by NHAI. ...

Two simple words - We Won!

WE WON!!! Two simple words. But even 24 hours after the NGT ruled in our favour, the enormity of what we accomplished is yet to sink in. We are just a motley group of people. How can we expect to take on the System", I told a friend last year. "Only the Avengers can pull this off; we are not them." When we set out to save the Chevella Banyans, we hoped to win, but I doubt if we expected to win. Everybody knows that banyans are a keystone species. Nobody denies the economic benefit of having a stretch of massive road lining banyans. Everyone claims to love trees. BUT, that dreaded word- DEVELOPMENT! We were accused to coming in the way of development. We have been conditioned into thinking that it is always a battle between the environment and development. People advocating for the environment are branded as being "anti development". But, it need not be a binary. Both can co-exist. Both must co-exist. "Road bhi. Jhaad bhi" was always our slogan...
